Takashi’s world was recently reshuffled when his parents remarried. Suddenly, his quiet, predictable life was joined by a new family member, a stepsister. The idea of sharing his home with a girl he’d never met was awkward, to say the least. His mind buzzed with the potential for discomfort, the silent meals, the forced politeness. He braced himself for the worst.
But nothing could have prepared him for Alice.
Alice, his new stepsister, was from Scandinavia, and her presence was like a beam of Nordic light in his ordinary Japanese home. She was strikingly beautiful, with a gentle demeanor that immediately softened his apprehensions. On one hand, Takashi was genuinely happy; having a kind and lovely sister was a gift he hadn’t expected. Yet, on the other hand, a very specific and physical attribute of hers began to stir a storm within him, her conspicuously large bust.
It was an undeniable, ever-present fact that constantly rattled his composure. But Takashi was determined to be a good brother. He saw how earnestly Alice was trying to become part of the family, her sincere efforts to bridge the gap between them. He admired that. So, he made a conscious choice. He locked away his flustered, improper feelings deep inside, building a wall of rationality and duty. He would be the supportive, kind older brother she deserved. He listened to her stories about her home country. For a while, the wall held.
Then came the day that shattered everything.
It was a simple accident, a wrong turn, an open door that have been closed. In a fleeting, heart-stopping moment, Takashi saw Alice completely unclothed. The image seared itself into his mind, instantaneous and profound.
And just like that, the careful wall he had so painstakingly built the wall of “brotherly duty,” of “rational distance,” of “appropriate feelings” crumbled into dust. The internal balance he had fought so hard to maintain was utterly and irrevocably broken.
The polite fiction of a simple sibling relationship was over, leaving Takashi adrift in a sea of emotions far more complicated and tumultuous than he had ever imagined.
