This story doesn’t begin on a bustling city platform, but in a place steeped in a quiet, a dilapidated local line, a retro station building that has seen better days, and the haunting whisper of a single-car train rattling through the twilight. It’s a setting that immediately establishes a mood of isolation and eerie seclusion, a world away from the watchful eyes of the city. Our protagonist is Takataki Hikari. On this particular evening, her stayback at school has run later than usual, leaving her to catch this final train. The carriage she steps into is a world of its own; dimly lit by weak interior lights, the shadows are long and the atmosphere is thick with a silence that feels heavy. The only other person aboard is a man named Matate Jun. There’s something about his demeanor, his appearance, that radiates a disquieting and unsettling aura. In the vast emptiness of the train car, his presence feels overwhelmingly large. She is acutely, uncomfortably aware that they are completely and utterly alone.
